Founded in 1897 as "Birreria Reininghaus" by two German
brothers, the pub owes its name to the waiters in red jackets: the Florentines, finding it difficult to pronounce the foreign name, would say "Let's go to the ones with the red jackets". A nerve centre of Florentine Futurism, it hosted chess circles frequented even by Lenin and the editors of the magazines Lacerba and La Voce. In the small Liberty-style glass-walled rooms, among amid smoke, sparkling wine and absinthe, fiery nights were spent with Papini, Marinetti, Montale and Vittorini. After being listed by the Superintendency for its strong cultural identity, the venue reopened its doors in June 2024 following a careful restoration, once again becoming a landmark in the heart of Florence.
