Mozart stayed here in 1770, when he went to the Accademia Filarmonica in Verona, aged thirteen, for his first concert in Italy. While on an official visit in 1867, Giuseppe Garibaldi stood on the balcony and roused the citizens in the square with a memorable speech about the Unification of Italy. Most beautifully restored and turned into a luxury hotel in 1958, the hall has maintained its sumptuous antique furnishings, frescoes and ceramics, and has returned to the city the splendid reception hall, known as the Arena Casarini, after the painter who frescoed it. A magnificent roof terrace soars high over all Verona.
